If you love yarn (and we know you do), you’ve likely seen, squished, and maybe even stitched with Spincycle Yarns! Spincycle’s magically marled yarns have been sparking excitement in crafters around the world for over two decades, popularized in patterns from well-known designers.
What you might not know is that these iconic yarnmakers had their humble start in a Bellingham, Washington farmer’s market! Friends and fibre enthusiasts Kate Burge-Tibi and Rachel Price started Spincycle Yarns as a small handspinnery in 2004, dyeing and spinning each and every skein entirely by hand.
As demand for their color-changing yarns surged, these crafty spinsters faced the challenge of transforming from full-time handspinners into commercial yarnmakers. A chance encounter with an enterprising mini-mill owner was the lucky break they needed, providing the opportunity to develop a method of machine-spinning yarns that could accurately mimic the look and feel of their handspun. When the mill owner retired, Kate and Rachel purchased their equipment and set up shop, giving them total control over their yarn-making process.
Now with over twenty employees in their hometown of Bellingham, the Spincycle team brings colorful joy to crafters worldwide, still carrying out every step from dyeing, spinning, packing, and shipping entirely in-house, sourcing US-grown yarn from Corriedale, Merino, Rambouillet, and Targhee sheep raised in Colorado, South Dakota, and Wyoming.
These awesome yarnmakers aren’t resting on their well-deserved laurels, though; they’ve got big plans for the future, including moving the mill and dyeworks to their own recently-purchased building in downtown Bellingham.
As if this small but mighty company wasn’t impressive enough, Spincycle hues (and their names) are magical! Their amazing colorways feature slowly shifting colors that melt into one another to create surprising new shades—and each skein is truly unique! It’s no wonder these enchanting yarns sell out as fast as they’re created (including our exclusive fibre space™ colorway, Royal Mile!).
