I am just past the largest chart of Red Rock Canyon.
I was excited to find that this larger chart is done in two versions: one that is a “what you see is what you get” version that is a more traditional way of charting, and a version that aligns with the rest of the charts. I’ll admit that it took my brain a few minutes to adjust to reading the first version and remembering that a blank square is a knit on the RS but a purl on the WS, since I had just adjusted to reading them the other way. I wouldn’t recommend knitting this shawl with another lace project. Your head might explode.
One of the charts is repeated 7 times the first time around and I chose to carry the two colors up the side to avoid having to weave in 14 tails. I now regret this decision.
I don’t like the look of the yarn drawn up the side and it is going to impact how this blocks out as that blue strand will prevent me from stretching the fabric the way I will want to. I wish I had the emotional fortitude to frog back, but I don’t.
So the next time that I hit this repeating chart, I did cut the ends rather than carry them up the side.
If you decide not to cut with each color change, here are my suggestions:
1. Because the drag or carry is more than just two rows, you must wrap the two colors around each other at the end before continuing in the same color. Otherwise you will have a loop hanging out on the ends.
2. Leave some extra length in that carried yarn so that it is able to stretch later during blocking. I definitely didn’t leave enough give.
Here’s a really bad photo of my progress…hoping to finish it super soon. Wish me luck!
