The Tall Ship Providence, a reproduction of the Colonial-era ship Providence, has arrived in Old Town! The Woodrow Wilson Bridge opened late last night around midnight for the ship’s passage through. It is now in its new home in Old Town’s waterfront.
The Tall Ship Providence will be the centerpiece of a new history project featuring nautical life in the 18th century which will open later in the summer. There will be an accompanying temporary visitors center at 1 Cameron Street where visitors can learn about the ship’s history and the beginnings of the U.S. Navy. A permanent visitors center is set to open in 2020. The experience will feature a John Paul Jones reenactor, aboard-ship tours, weekly sales, private charters and other events to enhance the existing offerings of Old Town’s newly revamped waterfront.
