Sometimes I might take on too much a bit too much. Just sometimes. Not all the time (quiet Phil!) So about two weeks ago I decided that my father should get a warm cashmere-ish pair of socks for his birthday. I decided this at least two weeks ago. And then I had a retreat and finished a sweater and started two more and now it is a week away and I have no socks. This morning, the socks became sport weight because even a knitting pro can’t produce a pair of socks on sock weight yarn in a week (well, I suppose I could but then I couldn’t knit this hat or my two sweaters.) Anyways, I tried really really hard to get up and go to work this morning. I made myself an Illy coffee with my new Illy espresso maker (decaf latte of course) and put it in my Grumpy mug (I can explain later) and then found, to my excitement, that my Grumpy mug fits in my car cup holder when the rubbery insert is removed. So exciting!
I stopped by the shop on my way in (as a way of procrastinating) and bought another ball of Baby Cashmerino in green to pair with the brown that I already had in my stash (took me a full 20 minutes this morning to find it. Might have been procrastinating again). I did get cast on during the commute in, using the Turkish method to eliminate a seam in the toe. For those of you who I taught the figure eight method, I am sorry. The Turkish is waaay easier.
Anyways, I was inspired by my student Sandy’s socks below, which she finished after having a sock phobia for so long..yeah Sandy! So since Sandy can do it (finish an actual PAIR of socks), I can do it…and in a week apparently. Well wish me luck.
As for that Grumpy mug…well in 1993, my parents were taking us on what would be one of very few family vacations. My brother did something terrible a few weeks before we were scheduled to leave. Hard to remember exactly what he did…could have killed an animal, set something on fire, tried to take out a small child with a stapler…who knows. So my parents cut him out of the trip. Then I came down with a severe sinus and ear infection. Lovely. No plane rides for me. So my parents decided to go to Disney World anyway! Who does that?! They leave and a blizzard hits (the infamous blizzard of 1993). I was stuck in central Pennsylvania (bad enough when the sun is shining..makes Scranton PA look like New York City). Because I was sick, our baby sitter wouldn’t let me leave the house and play in the snow. So when my parents called from sunny Florida, I wasn’t very pleasant to them. So they brought me back this Grumpy mug (you know, one of the seven dwarfs). It says: “grumpy adj. negative; crusty; ill-tempered” Now 15 years later, it is still my favorite coffee mug.
