What are your COVID-19 precautions?
fibre space is a proud participant in the “ALX Promise” program, which certifies that we have committed to higher safety standards for employees and customers than the minimum rules required by law for all businesses.
UPDATED COVID PRECAUTIONS BELOW AS OF JANUARY 30, 2023.
- Masks will be required at the discretion of the teacher. If you are participating in a class and need others to be masked due to your health condition, simply let the instructor know. If you are recovering from or have been exposed to COVID-19, please wear a mask to class to protect others.
How many students are in your classes?
Our Introduction and “Beyond Basics” classes are small, with six students at the most.
Where are the classes located?
Our classroom spaces are on the second floor of our two-story historic building.
If you cannot climb a flight of stairs, please contact the shop when registering for a class or event so that accommodations can be made.
Which level class should I take?
We offer classes for every level of knitter, crocheter and spinner…even those who haven’t yet picked up needles, hook or spindle. Each class has a “rating” that indicates the skills that you must have to take the class. Each course then lists the skills that you will learn. Jump on over and search by level to find out where you are on the fibre space stitch-o-meter and what classes are offered at that level. If you still aren’t sure, just give us a buzz! 703-664-0344
If you are looking for something specific, use our browse button to search by project type or click on over to the search feature at the top of the page to type in keywords such as “intarsia” or “increasing.”
Are supplies included in the class fee?
While supplies are not included in the price of the class, we find that almost all of our classes can be taken with between $15 and $30 in supplies. Our shop offers a wide variety of yarns and needles to fit many budgets and fibre preferences. Students will receive a 5% discount on class supplies and anything else purchased at that time. Just let us know that you are in one of our classes when you check out! And our introduction to knitting and crochet students get a 10% discount to welcome you into the fibre fold!
Do I need to register ahead of time?
Payment is due upon time of registration. We are unable to hold spaces in classes and workshops without prepayment.
What is the cancellation policy?
Class fees are not refundable unless the class is canceled by the shop. If cancellation is made outside of 72 hours of class start time, you will be provided with a store credit for use for any future purchase with the shop. Classes with fewer than two students may be canceled or rescheduled for insufficient registration. Your registration is valid for the dates listed in the description and may not be transferred to other class dates.
If you have a last minute cancellation, please contact the shop. If we are able to fill your space, we are happy to provide you with a store credit, even within the 72 hour time frame. We understand that emergencies happen, so we will do everything possible to find someone to take your spot. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide a store credit or transfer if we are not able to fill your space.
Can I bring my…(dog, kid, partner, elderly grandma)…
Only those registered for the class may attend the class. Since most of our classes occur after store hours, we can not allow anyone in the shop who is not registered for a class. If you traveled with someone to Alexandria, there are several coffee shops and cafes nearby where they can wait during your class. Due to the potential for disruptions and distractions, please do not bring your children or pets with you to class.
What if we have terrible weather?
fibre space™ follows the Federal Government and also local City of Alexandria when determining whether to cancel classes due to poor weather conditions. If these agencies close for weather, we will certainly delay or reschedule classes for that day. If we do not reschedule classes, but you do not feel comfortable commuting in the weather, please contact the shop to find out when you can come in to get help on your project due to the missed class.
What if I have to miss one of my classes?
You can stop by our Thursday night “Stitch in Space” for free help or schedule a private lesson with your instructor. Whenever possible, we will arrange for you to attend a different class taught by the same instructor, but only if that class is not full. We want to be sure that no more than 6 students are in any given class.
What if the class I want is full?
If the class that you want to take is full or isn’t being offered at a time that works for you, we can add you to the waitlist or you can register for a private lesson. To be added to the waitlist for a class, please contact the shop.
What if the skill that I want to learn isn’t offered?
If nothing is fitting your needs or schedule, no worries! We offer private and semiprivate lessons and private events or parties. To set up a private lesson, simply email us with your availability and what you would like to learn. To read more about hosting a private party or making your own knit or crochet class with friends, jump on over to the Host an Event page for more details!
