Weekend Weaving Retreat with Liz Gipson: Lace Blocks

This class meets on ALL the following dates:

  • Sunday, May 24, 2026

If you want to take your basic weaving skills to the next level, join us for an immersive weaving weekend on the rigid-heddle loom with the incredible Liz Gipson! If you plan on completing the Weaving Fundamentals course on Friday, this weekend workshop is a perfect follow-up. Saturday and Sunday: Lace Blocks

Although the term “pick-up stick” brings to mind picking up lots of ends, in the rigid-heddle world you pick up the ends once and leave the stick in place to create interlacements common to complex looms. These kinds of pick-up patterns can be used to create texture or lace. We will focus on the latter, using fine yarns and a sett that allows the yarns to move after washing to create holes with purpose.

Weaving lace allows you to create wearables, but also household goods such as table linens, curtains, and wall hangings. Even if lace is not your jam, understanding the fundamentals of using a pick-up stick paired with yarn spacing to get you the results you want is powerful information. A special focus will be on working with cellulose yarns and mastering a light “beat”. If you took last year’s workshop, this workshop will be similar, but with an added bonus of learning how to intersperse blocks of plain weave and lace.

This is a two-day workshop, 9 am – 4 pm. Each session will be 6 hours of instruction with a 1-hour lunch break.
