Modular Knitting with Negative Space: a workshop with Olga Buraya-Kefelian

In this class you will learn the technique for working knit fabric modular style while creating negative spaces without breaking of the yarn or working intarsia. You will practice a variety of negative space shapes while swatching, while considering possibilities for the use of this method in knitwear and for creating the Ten-Ten Wrap.

One four-hour session

Skills learned:

    • Making the right yarn and stitch pattern choice for knitting patterns with negative space
    • Several types of stretchy cast on methods
    • Create negative spaces in knit fabric continuously without breaking the yarn
    • Balancing the knit fabric while adding the negative spaces
  • Creating various shapes of negative spaces
  • Customizing size and other options for knitting Ten-Ten wrap


For swatching:

  • 100-200 yards of Sport weight or DK weight yarn for swatching
  • US #3 (3.25 mm) and US #4 (3. 5 mm) circular or straight
  • Removable stitch marker or a pin

For Ten-Ten wrap:

  • 1600 yards of fingering weight
  • US #4 (3.5 mm) circular needle, 24-36″
  • Crochet hook D (3.25 mm) or E (3.5 mm)
  • Removable stitch marker or a pin
  • Copy of Ten-Ten Wrap pattern by Olga Buraya-Kefelian.
