  • Wednesday, December 17, 2025

Learn the basics of crochet while making a pair of cute fingerless mitts with one of our amazing crochet instructors!

Three 1.5-hour classes

Skills needed:

Absolutely none! Our beginner class is ideal for those who are completely new to the craft or who haven’t knitted in many years and need a full refresher. Students must be 16 and older to enroll.

Skills learned:

  • Work a foundation chain

  • Chain stitch

  • Single crochet

  • Reading a crochet pattern

  • Terms

  • Basic fibre education

  • How to keep edges of rows straight

  • How to create three stitch patterns using only single crochet

Materials (all available at the shop for a 10% discount for your first class):

For each pair of mittens you make, you will need 150 yards of light-colored worsted-weight yarn. We recommend Manos del Uruguay Ideal or Kelbourne Woolens Germantown. We recommend not using very dark colors, as they make the learning process more difficult.

  • US H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook

  • Darning needle

  • Locking markers to mark turning chains

Optional materials:

Churchmouse Learn to Crochet Companion, Crochet: the Complete Guide, or Crocheting in Plain English

Preparation:

Be sure to come to the shop early enough to purchase your supplies and wind your yarn into balls before the start of class (suggested 15-30 minutes).
