Three 1.5-hour classes

Skills needed

Absolutely none! Our beginner class is ideal for those who are completely new to the craft, or who haven’t knitted in many years and need a full refresher. Students must be 16 and older to enroll.

Skills learned

  • Work a foundation chain
  • Chain stitch
  • Single crochet
  • Reading a crochet pattern
  • Terms
  • Basic fibre education
  • How to keep edges of rows straight
  • How to create three stitch patterns using only single crochet

Materials (all available at the shop for a 10% discount for your first class)

For each pair of mittens you make, you will need 150 yards of light-colored worsted-weight yarn. We recommend Manos del Uruguay Ideal or Kelbourne Woolens Germantown. We recommend not using very dark colors, as they make the learning process more difficult.

  • US H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook
  • Darning needle
  • Locking markers to mark turning chains

Optional materials

Churchmouse Learn to Crochet Companion, Crochet: the Complete Guide, or Crocheting in Plain English

Preparation

Be sure to come to the shop early enough to purchase your supplies and wind your yarn into balls before the start of class (suggested 15-30 minutes).
