On Giving Tuesday, we will be supporting Alive! with a food drive at fibre space.
In Alexandria, 8% of households are food insecure, with 9% of residents living with resources below the federal poverty line, according to a 2024 report from the Department of Community and Human Services. Many of our food-insecure residents are ineligible for government assistance due to their low income. Alive! helps meet that need by providing access to groceries, financial aid, and other essential support for more than 20,000 people each month. They operate three Food Hubs in our community, providing residents with free groceries, as well as supplying multiple food pantries and coordinating with community partners.
This year, we’re joining the cause. Bring in one of the items on the list on Tuesday, December 2, and we’ll give you 20% off your purchase that day. Can’t make it? We’ll be collecting donations all through December. (However, discount is only valid on December 2)
- Shelf-stable, nutritious foods (in non-glass containers). Some of the most needed items include:
• Canned proteins (like tuna, chicken, beans)
• Cooking oil
• Cereal and oatmeal
• Peanut butter and jelly
• Rice and pasta
• Shelf-stable milk
• Dried beans and lentils
• Halal foods (no gelatin, please)
