Meet our two newest yarnistas

You may have noticed some new faces around the shop recently. I wanted to formerly introduce you to our two newest yarnista members. (You can see all of us here).

What is your favorite technique?

I’m a huge fan of lace and cables. I like how ordered those techniques are and that the stitches just flow into each other. I also think that once you understand how each technique works, you can create beautiful projects that aren’t always as complicated as they appear. As for favorite types of projects, I’m a socks and shawls gal. If I could have lace and cabled socks and shawls for the rest of my life, I’d be a happy camper.

What is your favorite Finished Object (FO) ever?
My Evenstar Shawl if my absolute most favorite project. I was so pleased that I had completed it without any errors and conquered the 2800 beads around the edge (pro tip: NEVER count beads until you’re totally finished with a project). While I felt like a lace knitter before I had finished that project, it cemented in my mind that I could handle any lace project from that point forward. While it was quite an epic project, I decided I wanted to knit it (and other pi shawls) again as soon as I finished the first so hopefully someday I’ll have another Evenstar in my collection of FOs.

What made you want to be part of the Yarnista team?
As I went through high school and college, I didn’t know many people who knit, let alone who knit as much as I did. All I wanted was to share the passion I had with others and show them that knitting isn’t just that hobby your great grandmother may have done with ugly yarn. Joining the Yarnista team was the perfect opportunity to really share the knowledge I’d collected over the years with knitters and crocheters so that they could gain the confidence and desire to go forward and create whatever they wanted. It’s been a true pleasure thus far and a decision I definitely will never regret.

What is your favorite technique?

My favorite technique would have to be Magic Loop. Once I learned how to knit hats and mittens without those cursed double-pointed needles, I never looked back. Whoever came up with it is a genius!
What is your Finished Object (FO) ever?

I have a project on Ravelry that I titled “My Very Most Favorite Project”; it’s an ombre cowl made from the pattern “Gradient”. I made mine in Shibui Silk Cloud. It’s soft and hazy and beautiful, and I really love wearing it. I finished a project last week, however, and I love it so much I think I have a new contender for the title of Favorite Project. It’s a pattern called “Omena” and I made it in Woolfolk Far (color #13; it’s a teal green/blue). It’s such a unique design, and the wool is ridiculously soft. I just love how it turned out, and I can already tell I’m going to wear it a lot this winter!

What made you want to be part of the Yarnista team?

I’ve been a customer at fibre space™ since it first opened on Fayette Street in 2009. Every time I walked in, I would swoon over the yarn and the beauty of the shop and think, “Man, wouldn’t it be awesome to work here?”  But of course the shop is more than just a store full of pretty things! fibre space™ is a vibrant community of makers who share a passion for expressing their creativity with needles and yarn. In our fast-paced lives in this fast-paced city, the chance to slow down and create something with our own two hands is vital. Danielle has created a place for this vibrant community of makers to thrive, and it is really the heart of All Things Fiber in the DC area. Who could blame me for jumping at the chance to work here?! Being on this team of amazing, fun and talented Yarnistas is really a dream come true. I feel so lucky and grateful to be a part of it!
