If you know what I’m talking about, I need say no more. If not, let me change your life. For better or worse.
“Laphroaig is a hell of a drink, especially if you don’t like it. It’s oddly peaty . . . and positively bursting with smells straight out of the medicine cabinet, the quayside, a road repair depot and even an industrial plant (mouthwash, disinfectant, iodine, cough sweets . . . actually make that cough sours . . . seaweed, tar, diesel, oil).”
Being a Scotch drinker and an Iain Banks fan, how could I NOT purchase a bottle? And I found it to be heaven. Take into consideration that I love salty licorice (the kind that has ammonia as an ingredient) and grew up with a taste for cough syrup (my mom would let me have an occasional sip to encourage me to go to bed). On a visit to Scotland last month, I visited the Laphroaig distillery and became even more enamored. Fresh from my trip, I visited Fibre Space to teach and found myself some Laphroaig-inspired yarns.

On the right is Miss Babs Kunlun in Nori. On the left is Woolfolk Sno in color 14 (bottom), 10+15 (middle). What will I make? I’m not in a rush to decide. I have that whole bottle to work through for inspiration!
So, back to the drinking. The cocktail of the week is Laphroaig 10, neat. “10” is the number of years the Scotch has been aged, and “neat” means no ice. Straight up Scotch. Try it. I know that Vermillion has Laphroaig, so order one with friends and pass it around. It might change your life.
