Just landed: Fonty’s woolly and washable Tartan 6

Welcome Tartan 6, an Aran-weight wool yarn from Fonty! While you might not be thinking of cozy wool knits just yet, Tartan 6 is a great reason to get started! This springy, lofty yarn comes in a beautiful rainbow of jewel tones, pastels, and neutrals. Tartan 6 can be worked at a range of gauges, from a heavy worsted to a bulky weight yarn, perfect for squishy winter accessories and garments with texture.

Fonty’s Tartan 6 highlights one of the ways Fonty is conserving resources. Traditional yarn dyeing, especially at large scale, can be water-intensive and generate waste. However, Fonty choose to dye the wool while it is still fleece (that is, unspun). As the fleece absorbs the dye, more fleece is dyed with the less-saturated dye batch, so there are multiple rounds that create different shades of the same colorway. Then, the different shades of fleece from one colorway are then spun together, with the addition of undyed fleece. It’s a more ecologically responsible process that produces less waste and results in yarn shades with incredible depth of color and natural heathering!

And, this wonderfully woolly yarn is also machine washable! (We still encourage you to use cold water, gentle cycle, and with good wool wash to preserve your finished objects.) Tartan 6 is a great option for baby and childrens’ blankets, clothes, and accessories!

Picture of Heather

Heather

A family friend taught Heather how to crochet when she was a child, and she taught herself how to knit about ten years later. She’s had a hook or needles in hand ever since. Heather makes whimsical amigurumi and blankets, but also makes socks, shawls, and sweaters to highlight gorgeous dyes and fibers. She’s excited to join the fibre space community and to help more folks tap into their creativity!
