By now you’ve likely seen the “Melt the ICE Hat” pattern that’s gone viral online in the wake of recent events in Minnesota. We know many in our community are stitching up this pattern, and we fully support everyone who wants to make their voices heard through crafting. (If you’re looking for red yarn for your own hat, we’ve got plenty of weights and fibres for you to choose from!)
You may be wondering if we’re planning to share the pattern on social media, teach a class, or create kits for the hats – we aren’t, and here’s why.
From past experience we know that posting politically related messaging on social media can attract some extreme reactions from people outside our community. As a store with a physical presence as well as an online one, we need to carefully consider the impact of any statements we make – our first responsibility is always to protect the safety of our staff and customers.
The mission of the Melt the ICE Hat pattern is to raise funds for local immigrant aid organizations, so we encourage you to purchase the pattern directly from the creators.
We also encourage supporting our fellow yarn shops in Minnesota, as they navigate operating businesses just like ours in communities experiencing ongoing oppression, fear, and the threat of violence. (Some suggestions: Amazing Threads, Dandelion Fiber Co., Harriet & Alice, Knit & Bolt, MUSE2320 Fiber Co., Needle & Skein, The Yarnery.)
To provide mutual aid directly to Minnesotans, we recommend donating to the Women’s Foundation of Minnesota Immigrant Rapid Response Fund.
To contribute closer to home, we suggest directing your gifts of time, attention, and funding to Casa Chirilagua in Alexandria or other local organizations in your community.
Stay safe, stay salty.
