Just Landed: The transhumant ecological wool of WoolDreamers 90 Varas!

The yarnistas have been waiting for Wooldreamers’ newest yarn to arrive, and it’s finally here! Spun with wool from transhumance-pastured flocks of Merino sheep, a living symbol of Spain’s pastoral heritage, 90 Varas celebrates the beauty of Spanish wool and honors the landscape, culture, and communities that preserve Spain’s rich textile traditions. Fleece-dyed and gently woolen-spun to preserve its rustic nature, this soft, lofty 2-ply yarn comes in a gorgeous assortment of heathered shades that work up into warm, plush fabrics – we’re dreaming of lightweight sweaters, beautifully blended colorwork, and airy lace.

The name of the yarn, 90 Varas, pays tribute to the historic practice of transhumance pastoralism, in which herds migrate seasonally from mountain rangeland to lowland pastures along cañadas reales, the rugged drovers’ roads of the transhumant region. Traditionally measured in widths of ninety varas, the wooden staves carried by shepherds to guide their flocks, these ancient pathways reflect the long history of this eco-beneficial grazing method, creating a deep connection between people, animals, and land.
