Must Make Monday: Ovis Sweater

Must Make Monday: Ovis Sweater

It’s October, which means that fall festival season is underway, and we have sweaters on our minds. One of my favorite parts of fall, other than savoring a basic pumpkin spice latte or watching the foliage turn, is watching all the fun sweater pattern releases ahead of the big fibre festivals (hello, Rhinebeck!). Caitlin Hunter’s newest sweater, Ovis, did not disappoint. And, as many of my own sweater students know, I’ve already begun swatching using the matching hat pattern.

This sweater has it all. A cute all-over Fair Isle repeat (sheep! Who doesn’t love sheep?), a comfy crew neck, and a higher drop shoulder for a tailored fit. Knit from the top down, it’s easy to customize length and fit. Knit in a DK weight yarn, the sweater will be cozy without being too warm for our mid-Atlantic weather, and it will also knit up quickly. Personally, I hope to have mine done in time to debut at Vogue Knitting Live in January (for all those attending, I hope to see you there!).

While the shop offers an endless choice of amazing DK yarns perfect for Fair Isle knitting, we think this sweater will truly shine in the newly arrived Kingston by Jill Draper. Kingston is a dyed-in-the-wool tweed filled with flecks of color. Made with Targhee wool, it’s both round and bouncy, making it ideal for Fair Isle and other colorwork. Kingston has a visually rustic appearance, reminiscent of sheep in the fields–a fun visual match for the sheep pattern in Ovis. But just like those sheep, this wool washes up soft and snuggly; we know it will be one of your most-worn handknits in no time.
