With the start of fall finally here, we are assembling our hand-knit wardrobes for the cooler weather season. Fashion blogs, magazines, and trending influencers have all noted that socks are in this season. Paired with everything from chunky loafers to sneakers to even heels, socks can be as much of a statement piece in your outfit as a bright handbag or a bold scarf. Since knitting bold, fun socks has always been our favorite anyway, the yarnistas are pretty excited about this sock-making season!
We absolutely love the idea of embellishing socks with embroidery to add extra texture and pattern without the difficulty of stranded fair isle. The Vaheldus sock pattern is made with a technique called roosimine, an Inlay Estonian technique that has the appearance of embroidery through intentional floats in contrasting yarn on the right side of your knitting. This project is perfect for a sock with a bit of a pop to brighten up your outfit this fall.
Not ready to tackle this on your own? This roosimine technique is being taught by the amazing Aleks Byrd in a workshop next week! We are so lucky to be hosting designer and teacher Aleks Byrd for a weekend of workshops. Aleks’ passion is creating modern patterns connected to the past using little-known traditional techniques. Her latest book Traditions Revisited – Modern Estonian Knits brings together her designs and teaching as an introduction to Estonian knitting, both traditional and traditional-inspired. See all of her workshops here.
