Supplies

  • 1 skein Neighborhood Fiber Co. Studio DK (DK weight; 100% superwash Merino; 275 yd/251m per 4 oz/113g skein). One skein will make two infant, toddler, or kid hats or one adult small or adult large hat. Samples shown in Canton (infant), Belair-Edison (toddler), Mondawmin (kid), Ziggy Stardust (adult small), and Bolton Hill (adult large).
  • US#5 (3.75mm) 16-inch circular needle, or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Set of four US#5 (3.75mm) double-pointed needles, or size needed to obtain gauge
  • US#4 (3.5mm) 16-inch circular needle, or one size smaller than size needed to obtain gauge
  • 2 stitch markers in two different colors
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

infant (toddler, kid, adult small, adult large)

Finished Measurements

13 (15, 17.5, 20, 21.25) inches in circumference at widest point

Approximately 6 (7.5, 9, 10, 10) inches deep (easily adjustable)

Skills Used

Knitting, purling, working in the round, basic increases and decreases

Gauge

22 sts and 30 rnds = 4 inches/10 cm in Stockinette stitch, blocked

To save time, take time to check gauge.

Pattern Stitches

Sailor’s Rib: Multiple of 5 sts

Rnds 1 and 2: [K1 tbl, p1, k2, p1] around.

Rnds 3 and 4: [K1 tbl, p4] around.

Rep Rnds 1–4 for pattern.

 

INSTRUCTIONS

Ribbing

Using smaller needle, CO 65 (75, 85, 95, 100) sts. Join to work in the round, being careful not to twists sts. Place marker to indicate beg of rnd. Work Rnds 1–4 of Sailor’s Rib 3 times, then work Rnds 1–2 once more.

Hat

Change to larger needle. Set up pattern and increase on next rnd as follows:

For sizes infant (toddler) only:

Inc Rnd: K1tbl, p4, k1tbl, place marker of second color, k3, kfb, [k9, kfb] 5 (6) times, knit to end—6 (7) sts inc; 71 (82) sts total.

For size kid only:

Inc Rnd: [K1tbl, p4] 3 times, k1 tbl, place marker of second color, k3, kfb, [k5, kfb] 10 times, knit to end of rnd—11 sts inc; 96 sts total.

For sizes small adult (large adult) only:

Inc Rnd: [K1 tbl, p4] 3 times, k1 tbl, place marker of second color, k3, kfb, [k4, kfb] to end of rnd—16 (17) sts inc; 111 (117) sts total.

All Sizes:

Work as established, working the sts between the markers in Sailor’s Rib and knitting the remaining sts, until hat measures 4 (5.5, 7, 8, 8) inches from CO edge, or about 2 inches less than your desired final length. End on Rnd 1 of Sailor’s Rib. Then, decrease for crown as follows.

Crown

Note: Change to double-pointed needles when sts no longer fit comfortably on circular needle.

Rnd 1: [K1tbl, p1, k2tog, p1] 1 (1, 3, 3, 3) times, k1tbl, [k2, k2tog] 16 (19, 20, 23, 25) times, end k1 (0, 0, 3, 1)—54 (62, 73, 85, 89) sts rem.

Rnds 2–4: [K1tbl, p3] 1 (1, 3, 3, 3) times, k1tbl, knit to end of rnd.

Rnd 5: [K1tbl, p2tog, p1] 1 (1, 3, 3, 3) times, k1tbl, [k2, k2tog] 12 (14, 15, 18, 19) times, end k1 (1, 0, 0, 0)—41 (47, 55, 64, 67) sts rem

Rnds 6–8: [K1tbl, p2] 1 (1, 3, 3, 3) times, k1tbl, knit to end of rnd.

Rnd 9: [K1tbl, p2tog] 1 (1, 3, 3, 3) times, k1tbl, [k2, k2tog] 9 (11, 11, 13, 14) times, end k1 (0, 1, 2, 1)—31 (35, 41, 48, 50) sts rem.

Rnds 10–12: [K1tbl, p1] 1 (1, 3, 3, 3) times, k1tbl, knit to end of rnd.

Rnd 13: [K2tog] 1 (1, 3, 3, 3) times, [k1, k2tog] 9 (11, 11, 14, 14) times, knit to end—21 (23, 27, 31, 33) sts rem.

Rnds 14–15: Knit.

Rnd 16: [K2tog] 10 (11, 13, 15, 16) times, end k1—11 (12, 14, 16, 17) sts rem.

Rnd 17: Knit.

Cut yarn and draw tightly through remaining sts. Fasten off.

FINISHING

Weave in ends and wet block.
