Holiday Gifting with Fingering Weight Yarns

Holiday Gifting with Fingering Weight Yarns

If you aren’t accustomed to working with fingering weight yarns, don’t be alarmed. Despite being on the finer side, they work up quickly and can produce great accessories and toys that aren’t big and bulky. So before you cross fingering weight projects off your crafting to-do list, give some of these ideas a look.

The Holden shawl by Mindy Wilkes looks like a huge commitment, but body of the shawl is entirely stockinette (read: quick!). The simple lace edge works well with a variety of yarns, both solid and variegated. Armed with one skein of Miss Babs Keira, whip up the small or medium size into an impressive shawl in no time at all.

Another great shawl is Herald by Janina Kallio. The simple eyelet pattern combined with the bias construction creates a lot of visual interest that would highlight hand-dyed yarns well. One skein of Neighborhood Fiber Company Studio Sock, Hazel Knits Artisan Sock or Crave Filigree would knit up beautifully into this drapey shawl.

For more experienced lace knitters, check out Wendy Neal’s Smokeberry. This lace cowl is in keeping with the ever popular infinity scarves and the delicate lace pattern screams to be knit out of luxurious yarn. Since it’s knit in one long piece with the ends joined together, the length is easily customized as well. Consider around 350 yards of Pepperberry Sport, Woolfolk Tynd or the brand new Crave Summit for this stylish yet warm gift.

The Sockhead Hat, designed by Kelly McClure, is a fun slouchy hat that works with every yarn. The pattern is also great for new hat knitters since the majority of the hat is in stockinette stitch and you knit until you’re out of yarn. Some fun yarn options include Highland Handmades Sugar Maple Sock or the Arne and Carlos colorways of Schachenmayr Regia.
