Whim Pop would like to say “hi.” (See logo above. Clever, right?) And we’d like to say hi right back — especially because they’re a new neighbor at 1309 King St.

I’m sure you got that they are all about ice pops — both the name and the image above, from their website, gives you a bit of clue — but to delve a little deeper, the company aims to support community health by providing a treat “without the guilt.” Another thing that makes Whim Pops unique is their focus on local ingredients and sustainability. Obviously, with goals like this, the company promises no coloring or artificial flavors are ever added to their pops either.

Whim Pop started in 2012, selling frozen fruit pops at Oakton, Va., Smart Markets and they still operate at farmers markets around Northern Virginia. The King Street location is its first brick-and-mortar spot, and they offer a menu of pops in year-round, seasonal and cocktail flavors.

Year-round flavors include coffee, lime, strawberry, tamarind and hibiscus pomegranate. On the menu for the summer? Banana fig, cherry vanilla, jicama, peach ginger, pineapple chili and strawberry rhubarb, among others. Of course, by far, my favorites are on the cocktail menu. To name a few: red wine with berries, white wine with peach, Bloody Mary, margarita, mojito and sangria.

We highly recommend the next time you’re on King Street you make sure to stop in to experience their awesome treats. Beyond their delicious pops they also have espresso, hot chocolate on a stick (chocolate that you stir into steamed milk — yum!), tea from Capital Teas and pastries.

Whim Pop is open: Sunday-Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesday and Thursday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
