ENGLEBERG

ENGLEBERG

A warm, festive cowl using Neighborhood Fiber Co. Capital Luxury Worsted, based on traditional Scandinavian motifs seen in groundbreaking twentieth-century graphic design. Check it out here!

Engleberg_2By Ann Weaver

Supplies:

Approximately 150 yds (well under 1 skein) Neighborhood Fiber Co. Capital Luxury Worsted in each of two colors; shown in Druid Hill (A) and Woodberry (B)

US 8 (5.0mm) 16-inch circular needle

2 stitch markers, 1 in a second color to indicate beginning of round

Tapestry needle for sewn bind-off and weaving in ends

Finished Measurements

Approximately 19 inches in circumference and 14 inches long

Gauge

20 sts and 24 rows = 4 inches (10cm) in stranded Stockinette stitch

NOTE: Be sure to carry your unused color VERY LOOSELY along the back of your work. If you work too tightly, the cowl won’t fit over your head. I recommend testing for fit a few rounds into the stranded portion to make sure you’re working loosely enough. If you’re a tight knitter, consider going up a needle size to a US 9.

Instructions

Using A and the long-tail method (or your preferred method of creating a loose cast-on), CO 51 sts, pm, CO 45 sts, pm of second color to indicate beg of rnd—96 sts.

Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist sts.

Edging

Rnd 1: (K1, p1) to end of rnd.

Rep (Rnd 1) 4 times—5 rnds total.

Next rnd: Purl to last st, pfb—97 sts.

Section 1

Join B and work Charts A and B as follows:

Work Chart A across 51 sts, sm, work 4-st Chart B 11 times, then work Sts 1–2 of Chart B. Rep 4 rnds of Chart B 8 times while working 32 rnds of Chart A.

Section 2

After completing Chart A, reverse colors for Section 2, using A as B and B as A.

Work Rnds 25–32 of Chart A, then work Rnds 2–24 of Chart A, then work Rnd 1 of Chart A. Rep 4 rnds of Chart B 8 times while working these 32 rnds.

Cut B.

Edging

Rnd 1: Purl to last 2 sts, p2tog—96 sts.

Next Rnd: (K1, p1) to end of rnd.

Rep this rnd 4 times—5 rnds of ribbing total.

BO VERY loosely; I recommend using the sewn bind-off (see Abbreviations and Special Stitches for instructions for the sewn bind-off).

Weave in ends and wet block to measurements.
