Materials

  • Miss Babs Northumbria Fingering – BFL [100% Wool]; color Old Gold; 100 grams – 437 yards 1 skein
  • US#1 (2.25 mm) double pointed needles
  • Cable needle
  • 3 stitch markers (optional)
  • Darning needle

Gauge

8 stitches x 12 rounds / 1” / stockinette stitch in the round

Size

S (M, L, XL), 7 (8, 9, 10)” circumference (in pattern slightly stretched)

Abbreviations

  • k – Knit.
  • k tbl – Knit through the back loop.
  • k2tog – Knit 2 stitches together.
  • p – Purl.
  • p2tog – Purl 2 stitches together.
  • sl 1 – Slip 1 stitch purlwise.
  • sl m – Slip marker.
  • ssk – Slip one stitch knitwise, then slip the next stitch knitwise. Insert left needle into the front loops of the slipped stitches and knit them together from this position (through the back loops).
  • wyib – With yarn held in back of work.
  • wyif – With yarn held in front of work.
  • 1/1 LPT – Slip the next stitch onto cable needle and hold in front of work. Purl the next stitch from the left-hand needle, then knit through the back loop the stitch from the cable needle.

Instructions

Cuff

Loosely cast on 56 (64, 70, 80) stitches.
Distribute stitches between needles and join being careful not to twist stitches.

Round: [p, k tbl, p4, k tbl, p0(1,0,1)] 8 (8, 10, 10) times

Repeat Round for a total of 12 rounds or until desired length of cuff.

Legs

For each leg, a two round transition from the cuff is worked before working the leg charts.

Right Leg

Work the Transition from Cuff to Chart A 4(4, 5, 5) times around the leg.

Beginning on Stitch 1 of Round 3, work Chart A 4(4, 5, 5) times around the leg. Work Chart A until desired length of leg is achieved.

Left Leg

To mirror the right leg, the small and medium sizes begin on Stitch 9 of the charts.

Beginning on Stitch 9(9, 1, 1) work the Transition from Cuff to Chart B 4(4, 5, 5) times around the leg.

Beginning on Stitch 9(9, 1, 1) of Round 3, work Chart B 4 (4, 5, 5) times around the leg. Work this chart until desired length of leg is achieved.

Heel Flap

The heel flap is knit back and forth on a total of 27(32, 34, 40) stitches.

Row 1: sl 1 wyif, p26(31, 33, 39)
Row 2: [sl 1 wyib, k1] 13(16, 17, 20) times, k1(0,0,0)

Repeat these 2 rows 12(15, 16, 19) MORE times for a total of 26(32, 34, 40) rows in the heel flap.

Heel Turn

Row 1: sl 1 wyif, p26(31, 33, 39)
Row 2: sl 1 wyib, k15(18, 18, 20), ssk, k1, Turn
Row 3: sl 1 wyif, P6 (7, 5, 7), p2tog, p1, Turn
Row 4: sl 1 wyib, k until 1 stitch before the gap, ssk, k1 Turn
Row 5: sl 1 wyif, p until 1 stitch before the gap, p2tog, p1 Turn

Repeat rows 4 and 5 until all stitches are worked and turn work.

sl 1, k16(19, 19, 23).

Gusset

As a result of knitting the heel flap and turning the heel, there should be a total of 15(18, 19, 22) slipped stitches on both sides of the heel.

Pick up 15(18, 19, 22) stitches along the right side of the heel. Place Marker.

Work the next 29(32, 36, 40) stitches in pattern. Place Marker.

Pick up 15(18, 19, 22) stitches along the left side of the heel.

k8(10, 10, 12), Place Marker. This marker will represent the beginning of the round.

Round 1: k until 3 stitches before the marker. k2tog, k1, sl m. Work the next 29(32, 36, 40) stitches in pattern. sl m, k1, ssk, k until the center marker. sl m.

Round 2: k until the marker, sl m. Work the next 29 (32, 36, 40)  stitches in pattern. sl m, k until the center marker, sl m

Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until 27 (32, 34, 40) stitches remain on the bottom of the foot.

Foot

Continue working the pattern as established on the instep and knitting the sole stitches until the desired foot length is reached and ending the pattern on row 32.

Work the Transition to Toe Chart beginning on Stitch 9(9, 1, 1) on the instep for a total of 2(2, 2 ½, 2 ½) repeats. k all stitches on the sole.

If ending the pattern at this point results in a shorter length required for the wearer, then repeat Round 2 of the Transition to Toe Chart until the desired length.

Toe

Round 1: k1, ssk, k22(26, 29, 34), k2tog, k1, Place Marker, k1, ssk, k22(26, 29, 34), k2tog, k1, Place Marker.

Round 2: k until the marker, sl m, k until the next marker, sl m.

Round 3: k1, ssk, k until 3 stitches before marker, k2tog, k1, sl m, k1, ssk, k until 3 stitches before next marker k2tog, k1, sl m.

Repeat rounds 2 and 3 until 28, (32, 34, 36) total stitches remain. Repeat round 3 (decreasing every round) until 12 (16, 16, 20) total stitches remain.

Cut the yarn and graft the remaining stitches together. Weave in all ends.
