retrogirlDress up the child in your life with this adorable retro styled hat – a new free pattern from fibre space™. The pattern uses three colors of Blue Sky Skinny Dyed Cotton and Skinny Organic Cotton and can be worked up in a variety of color combinations.

 

Materials

  • One skein each of Blue Sky Alpacas Skinny Dyed Cotton in Coffee, Gardenia & Cherry or 50 yards colors A & B for hat and 20 yards color C for flower
  • US#7 (4.5 mm) 16” circular and double pointed needles
  • stitch marker
  • darning needle

Sizes

Newborn (0-6 months, 6-12 months, 1-2 years)

Gauge

20 sts / 4″ / stockinette stitch in the round

Instructions

With main color (Gardenia), cast on 64 (72, 80, 88) sts, PM and join to work in the round.
Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 3 (3, 4, 4) rows.
Change to second color (Coffee) and knit 2 rows. From this point onward, you will continue to alternate two rows of these two colors for remainder of hat.
Work in stockinette stitch until hat measures 5 (5.5, 6, 6.5) inches.

Shape Crown
*K6, k2tog, repeat from * around. Knit one round. *K5, k2tog, repeat from * around.
Knit one round.
*K4, k2tog, repeat from * around.
Knit one round.
*K3, k2tog, repeat from * around.
Knit one round.
*K2, K2tog, repeat from * around.
Knit one round.
*K1, K2tog, repeat from * around.
Knit one round.
*K2tog around.
Break yarn and draw through remaining stitches. Weave in ends.

Flower
Using third color (Cherry), cast on 140 stitches. Working flat, purl one row. Knit one row. Purl one row.
*K2tog, repeat from * across. (70 stitches)
*P2tog, repeat from * across. (35 stitches)
*K2tog, repeat from * to last stitch, K1 (18 stitches)
*P2tog, repeat from * across (9 stitches)
Break yarn and draw through remaining stitches, turning fabric into a flower. Attach flower in three or more locations to hat and weave in all ends with darning needle.
