A Square a Day

A Square a Day

Keeps the doctor away? Not really, but a square a day is exactly what I need to knit to get this baby blanket done before my brother’s kid actually arrives. I have less than half of them done and I already cut down on the size of the blanket after realizing how large each square was. Really, the kid doesn’t need a blanket the size of a queen sized bed.

The pattern is from 100 Afghan Squares to Knit. It has an heirloom sorta look to it, with each block a different pattern and color. I am using Sublime Organic Cotton and I love it. I typically don’t knit with cotton because it pills, breaks down when washed and is terribly unforgiving to work with. But this cotton has captured my heart. It has six or so plies so it isn’t pilling and the organic cotton is so soft. I bought at least three bags of it during the last sale at A Tangled Skein and Knit Happens. Good thing since this blanket will use at least a bag…I am lucky in that Michael’s girlfriend really cares about family treasures and understands that something hand knit is special. The work will be worth it, and I know that my little nephew will have it forever.

It has become increasingly difficult to find time to knit these little squares so I rode the metro this morning hoping to catch a few extra minutes more than I would have if I drove to work. (since I can really only knit in the car while it is stopped or moving very slowly in traffic…) So this morning I got up at 5 am to run at the track with my running group, and it took a full two hours for my body temperature to return to something warmer than our refrigerator. I had frost bite on things that I didn’t know existed on my body. Then after walking to the metro, my fingers were frozen, and I couldn’t really knit anyway. I decided that I needed cashmere mittens to match my red cashmere hat so that I would have warm fingers on the metro and can knit. Except that stopping the baby blanket project to make cashmere mittens would mean even less baby blanket getting accomplished. Maybe I could purchase some gloves? Is that allowed when you are a knitter?

It feels a little odd.

Anyway, in other news…I did finally get my Glam Knits project blocked and dried but haven’t had anyone around to photograph it on me. I might wear it to the Knitalong tomorrow night and have someone take photos.

Oh! If you are in the area tonight, at 5:30 I will be at Tenley Sport & Health club doing a free knitting class. Why the health club? Well apparently the non knitting world is starting to realize that knitting is just as good for stress relief as exercise is. So the best place to find lots of stressed out future knitters is at the gym!
