I think mittens are going to be the big project for gifts this holiday (so friends and family, if you do read my blog, you are probably getting mittens for Christmas). Since Fair Isle is so “in” right now AND I have such a large stash of sock yarn, I selected the Anemoi mitten pattern for a Fair Isle Mitten class this fall.
Remember that ball of Wollmeise that Martha gave me in the color Rhubarb? Well, I then bought another ball from her in this horrifying shade of green that no sane person would buy or wear (Martha bought it and then I bought it from her…so what does that say about us?) Anyways, together these two colors create magic!
If you are looking for advice on what to select for your Fair Isle Mittens, I recommend one variegated yarn and one contrasting but complimentary solid color yarn. That way, the swirls of the pattern will stand out but will change colors as they work up the mitten. I am really surprised at how fast this is going despite the terribly scary chart. It is actually a really easy chart to read but definitely not meant to be knitted on the metro.
