Materials
- Worsted weight yarn in main color A Worsted weight yarn in contrast color B Worsted weight yarn in contrast color C
- US#8 (5 mm) double pointed needles
Instructions
Using B, cast on using figure eight cast on.
Holding two of the DPNs parallel, wrap yarn in and out of both needles in a figure eight fashion until there are 16 loops on each needle.
Using third DPN, knit the stitches from the first needle.
Using fourth DPN and working in the round, knit the stitches from the other needle. Note that on either the first or second needle, the stitches will be twisted and you will need to knit into the back loop.
Knit around one more row, this time working the stitches onto four needles (8 sts on each needle).
On the next row, K1, M1R, knit across to other end of toe and one stitch before the last, M1L, K1, repeat on other side of toe.
Knit one round.
Repeat the last two rounds, making one stitch on each end of each side of the toe (total of four increases per repeat) until there are 16 sts on each needle.
Knit one more round. Change to color C and knit one round.
Purl 6 rounds.
Change to color A and knit for 5 inches.
Change to color C and knit one round.
Purl six rounds.
Change to color A and knit for 2 inches.
Then place 32 heel stitches on one needle and 32 instep stitches on another
Heel Part I
Using color B, Begin Short Row Heel Part I (working only the heel stitches):
Row 1: K31, move yarn forward as if to purl, slip the last stitch.
Then turn your work.
Row 2: slip the first stitch, thus wrapping the first unworked stitch and purl across to last stitch, move the yarn back as if to knit and slip the last stitch.
Row 3: Slip the first stitch and knit across to the last stitch before the last wrapped stitch, bring yarn forward, slip one and turn.
Row 4: Slip the first stitch and purl across to the stitch before the last wrapped stitch, bring yarn back, slip one and turn.
Repeat these last two rows until only 16 stitches remain in the middle and there are 8 wrapped stitches on either side.
Heel Part II
Row 1: Knit across the 16 stitches in the middle, knit the first wrapped stitch by picking up the wrap and knitting both the wrap and the stitch together. Move yarn forward as if to purl and slip the next stitch (you have just wrapped that stitch a second time).
Row 2: Slip the first double wrapped stitch and purl across the middle stitches to the first wrapped stitch. Purl that stitch by picking up the wrap and purling it with the stitch. Move yarn back and slip the next stitch.
Continue last two rows, working the double wrapped stitches on the ends by picking up both wraps and working the together with the stitch.
Continue until you have all stitches, unwrapped, back on the needle.
Divide the stitches evenly around all three needles and begin working in the round on all stitches with color A.
Knit in Color A for another four inches.
Change to color C and knit one round.
Purl 6 rounds.
Change to color A and knit for 5 inches.
Change to color C and knit one round.
Purl 6 rounds.
Change to color A and knit for 5 inches.
Change to color B and work one round.
Switch to 2×2 or 4×4 ribbing and knit until desired length.
Bind off loosely, weave in ends, and block.
