SUMMARY:Weekend Weaving Retreat with Liz Gipson: Lace Blocks
DESCRIPTION:If you want to take your basic weaving skills to the next level\, join us for an immersive weaving weekend on the rigid-heddle loom with the incredible Liz Gipson! If you plan on completing the Weaving Fundamentals course on Friday\, this weekend workshop is a perfect follow-up. Saturday and Sunday: Lace Blocks \nAlthough the term “pick-up stick” brings to mind picking up lots of ends\, in the rigid-heddle world you pick up the ends once and leave the stick in place to create interlacements common to complex looms. These kinds of pick-up patterns can be used to create texture or lace. We will focus on the latter\, using fine yarns and a sett that allows the yarns to move after washing to create holes with purpose. \nWeaving lace allows you to create wearables\, but also household goods such as table linens\, curtains\, and wall hangings. Even if lace is not your jam\, understanding the fundamentals of using a pick-up stick paired with yarn spacing to get you the results you want is powerful information. A special focus will be on working with cellulose yarns and mastering a light “beat”. If you took last year’s workshop\, this workshop will be similar\, but with an added bonus of learning how to intersperse blocks of plain weave and lace. \n\n\nThis is a two-day workshop\, 9 am – 4 pm. Each session will be 6 hours of instruction with a 1-hour lunch break.  \n\n\nTools and Supplies\n\n Rigid-Heddle Loom with at least a 10-inch weaving width\n10-dent rigid-heddle\nthreading hook (included with loom)\nclamps (included with loom)\nwarping peg (included with loom)\nembroidery needle\nscissors\ntape measure\nTwo-Day Workshop requires a pick-up stick at least 10-inches long\, but not exceeding your loom’s weaving width.\n\nYarn\n\nTwo different colors of Kelbourne Woolens Mojave. High value contrast is recommended. \n\n\nPlease note: We have a limited number of looms and materials on order for this weekend workshop event. Be sure to order yours early.

Special attention will be paid to basic know-how\, making the most of pooling\, challenges and opportunities of working with wool vs cellulose yarns\, and the ways yarns deflect off the loom\, a basis for lace. \n\n\n\nFriday Day: Weaving Fundamentals—Gradient Scarflet \n\nThis day is for the new weaver. In this class\, you will learn how something as simple as slipping stitches can create beautiful designs. We’ll discuss reading a mosaic chart\, fixing mistakes\, reading your knitting\, and a little color theory. Choose from four patterns ranging from adventurous beginner to advanced\, and let’s play with color! \nTwo 2-hour sessions meeting weekly on same day of the week \nFor each pattern\, be sure to choose colors with high contrast. This will make learning the skill much easier! We recommend choosing at least one color to be solid or semi-solid. This could be either your Main Color or your Contrast Color! However\, if both your colors are variegated\, things will get muddy\, and it will be harder to read your knitting. If you are unsure if your colors have enough contrast\, take a photo of them together in black and white; if there is enough contrast\, one will appear much darker. You can also stop by the shop\, and someone will be able to help you out.  \n  \nBeginner: Issa Cowl\n© Spincycle Yarns 2017\nSkills needed:\n\nKnitting and purling in the round\n\nMaterials:\n\nSport weight yarn in the following amounts.
