Steeking 101 with Gudrun Johnston

November 11, 2023 @ 11:00 am - 2:00 pm
Event Category:
During this workshop we will look at the various methods used when steeking your knitting. Working from a swatch, we will primarily focus on the crocheted reinforcement method but other methods will be discussed and demonstrated. If you’re brave enough you can even try the Shetland method of no reinforcement!
We will also cover picking up stitches from the cut edge and tidying up the frayed stitches. Gudrun will share examples of steeks on some of her finished garment designs.

Skills needed:

Some experience with stranded knitting is necessary for this class as the homework will be a stranded swatch preferably in Shetland (or an equally woolly) yarn.

Materials:

  • Colorwork swatch homework
  • scissors for cutting
  • tapestry needle
  • crochet hook in one size smaller than needle used for knitting swatch
  • smooth fingering weight yarn (just a few yards)
  • 16 inch knitting needle in one size smaller than used for swatch
  • 25 yards extra yarn for working the picked up edging (same or different color to swatch)

About the instructor:

Gudrun Johnston is a Shetland-born knitwear designer currently based in Massachusetts. She is known for accessible modern-day patterns that are greatly inspired by her heritage. She frequently returns to Shetland, where she loves spending time with her family on the Westside.

With her friend Mary Jane Mucklestone, they host popular once in a lifetime trips to Shetland and together they have co-authored Grand Shetland Adventure Knits, published through Laine.
