Mt Vernon Estate sheep experience with Amy Ross Manko

Back by popular demand, join us at George Washington’s Mt Vernon for an amazing woolly experience! Meet the critically endangered rare breed Hog Island sheep as we visit an 18th century farm developed by President George Washington. The Farm represents the more than 3,000 acres Washington cultivated during the second half of the 18th century, and the flock is descended from the original flock transported from Hog Island when the sheep were removed. Our host, Amy Manko, will introduce you not only to the sheep themselves, but highlight the preservation efforts spearheaded by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association and discuss the unique Hog Island wool and all the wonderful uses for it. This is a unique experience and not to be missed!

Amy Ross Manko travels the country (and now the world) teaching, researching and writing about her favorite topic – Rare Breed Sheep! You may know her from her feature series in PLY Magazine too – “Sheep on the Edge” or her breed profiles in the U.K’s KnitNow magazine. When she’s not on the road, spreading the gospel of critically endangered livestock, she’s managing her historic farm with her son Drew, which raises 9 breeds of heritage and rare breed sheep, as well as cattle, draft horses, mini-donkeys and poultry. She is the owner of Ross Farm Mercantile Inc and provides love and shelter to homeless fiber equipment in her small fiber studio in Hudson, Ohio.
