SUMMARY:Introduction to Estonian Knitting with Aleks Byrd
DESCRIPTION:Get a taste of Estonian knitting by making a wristlet showcasing four traditional techniques. This workshop is an introduction to Estonian knitting\, exploring knit fringe\, knit braids\, bobbles\, and roosimine inlay knitting. We will travel across Estonia\, learning these different techniques that are much easier than they look. A great way to get to grips with many of the techniques used in Aleks Byrd’s patterns\, as well as covered in her book\, Traditions Revisited: Modern Estonian Knits. \n© Aleks Byrd\nSkill Level\nThis class is for intermediate knitters. Students should be comfortable to knit and purl in the round with two colors at a time (easy colorwork)\, reading from charts\, cast-on\, bind-off. \nClass Length\n6 hours in person taught in two 3-hour sessions with a 1-hour break between sessions. \nMaterials Needed\n\nUS#6 (4mm) needles for knitting small circumference (Double pointed needles or circular needles for magic loop)\nStitch markers\nScissors\nFlat stick / card approx 0.5” / 1.5 cm wide for wrapping fringe yarn loops\nDK yarn (preferably nothing slippery—think yarn you would use for colourwork) in 3 contrasting colours in the following approx. amounts:\n\nMC (main colour) 20g\nCC1 (contrast colour) 10g\nCC2 (contrast colour 2) 10g\n\n\n\nHomework\nStudents will be given instructions to have their swatch cast-on to continue knitting in the workshop. \n
