Cutting and Securing Steeks – a virtual workshop with Ann Budd

April 11, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Event Category:

Learn how a steek can be added to a simple stranded two-color pattern that’s knitted in the round. Ann will show you how to stabilize the stitches with slipstitch crochet (no sewing machine!), cut open the tube, and secure the cut edges so that button bands (or a zipper) can be added.

An illustrated handout will be provided.

Skills needed:

Students must be comfortable knitting small circumferences in rounds (they’ll need knit a tube if they want to follow along), working slip-stitch crochet, and picking up stitches.

Materials:

  • two contrasting colors of worsted-weight yarn
  • size U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) double-pointed knitting needles
  • 2 stitch markers
  • size G/6 (4.25 mm) crochet hook
  • tapestry needle
  • sharp scissors
  • homework swatch (see below)

Homework:

With main color (MC) CO 55 sts (48 sts for the tube; 7 sts for the steek). Arrange sts for working in rounds and join, being careful not to twist sts. Rounds begin in the center of the 7 steek sts.

Rnd 1: K4, place marker to denote end of steek sts, *k1, p1; rep from * to last 3 sts, place marker to denote beginning of steek sts, knit to end.

Rnds 2, 3, and 4: K4, *k1, p1; rep from * to last 3 sts, k3.

Join CC and work the steek sts in vertical stripes and the remaining 48 sts in checkerboard pattern as follows:

Rnds 5 and 6: [K1 with CC, k1 with MC] 2 times to marker, slip marker, *k2 with MC, k2 with CC; rep from * to marker, slip marker, k1 with MC, k1 with CC, k1 with MC.

Rnds 7 and 8: [K1 with CC, k1 with MC] 2 times to marker, slip marker, *k2 with CC, k2 with MC; repeat from * to marker, slip marker, k1 with MC, k1 with CC, k1 with MC.

Rep Rnds 5–8 until piece measures about 3 1/2” (9 cm) from CO, ending with Rnd 2 or 4 of pattern. Cut off CC

Rnd 9: With MC, knit to end.

Rnds 10, 11, and 12: K4, slip marker, *k1, p1; rep from * to marker, slip marker, k3.

BO all sts in pattern (knit the knits and purl the purls), removing markers when you come to them.

Do not weave in ends. Bring your swatch, knitting needles, yarn, crochet hook, tapestry needle, and scissors to class.
