About “A Good Yarn”

Here’s a story for you: a group of craft-curious makers get together every six weeks to listen to an audiobook and unwind via making: knitting, needlepoint, collage. You name it.
To join the club subscribe via the Old Town Books page on Libro.fm. You’ll get your first audiobook free! RSVP for our IRL meetups here then get crafting (and listening.)

October club and package

We’re kicking off the first club meeting with a cozy mystery by Mia P. Manansala. Blackmail and Babingka is the third book in her Tita Rosie’s Kitchen series. The books stand-alone and you do not need to read the first two to enjoy this one, but if you’d like to read the first two you can purchase them on oldtownbooks.com for 10% off. Just use “audiobook10” in the notes field at check out.

Meet ups:

  • October 9th at Old Town Books at 2 pm
  • October 30 from 4-6 pm at fibre space to finish up our cowls

So to review, three things to do:

We will be making this Maori inspired fair isle cowl by designer Francoise Danoy of Aroha Knits. This cowl design is based off of the main design types found in tāniko (traditional Māori weaving). Our kits are for the Kumara cowl, which means sweet potato leaves. Though the leaves are edible, it was the root of the potato that was an important staple food in Māori cuisine. It is associated with the Māori god Rongomātāne, the god of peace.
Our kits include one full skein of Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok and one bundle of mini skeins for the fair isle section. We will also include a paper copy of the pattern as well as a digital code to download on Ravelry. In addition to the kit, you will need the following materials:
  • US 8 / 5 mm size or size needed to obtain gauge on a 24 in./60 cm circular needle. (Gauge is 20 sts x 26 rows per 4 in./10 cm in St. st with suggested needle size and after blocking).
  • Darning/tapestry needle
  • Stitch marker

Skills needed:

  • Ability to knit and purl
  • basic colorwork / stranded fair isle skills
