3D Knitwear, Kune Kune Shawl with Olga Buraya-Kefelian

Three dimensional knitwear can be created in a variety of ways and utilizing many knitting techniques. Learn how to create the highly textured Kune Kune shawl.  Discover numerous tips or even how to customize it into a cowl!

One 4-hour session

Skills learned:

  • Provisional cast on
  • Partial knitting
  • Modular knitting
  • Reading your knitting to keep better track of your work
  • Picking up stitches efficiently to create welts/horizontal pleats
  • Fixing your mistakes


  • 2160 yards of lace weight yarn (if held double) OR 1080 yards of fingering or sport weight yarn (if held single)
  • US #5 (3.75 mm) circular, 24-36”
  • Crochet Hook D (3.25 mm) or E (3.5) mm
  • Waste yarn in different color and similar weight to work
  • One double pointed needle, 1 or 2 sizes smaller than main needle
  • Tapestry needle
  • Copy of Kune-Kune Shawl pattern by Olga Buraya-Kefelian
