Introduction to Cabling – Cabled Scarf

This quick crash course will show you how to cable like a pro, while starting a bulky cabled scarf.

One two hour class

Skills Needed:
This class is rated “funky” – the ability to knit and purl is required.

Skills Learned:

  • refresh your knowledge of the rib stitch
  • create reversible cables
  • read cable charts


  • For small (large) scarf: 525 (700) yards of aran weight wool. We recommend The Fibre Co. Arranmore.
  • US#8 (5 mm) straight or 24” circular needles
  • Tapestry needle
  • Cable needle
  • Stitch marker (optional)
  • Copy of Swilly pattern available here or in print at the shop


Using the long-tail cast on, loosely CO 40 (72) sts and work 5 rows of 1×1 ribbing (K1,P1).
