Trudy learned to knit from her mother and grandmother; one of her favorite photos is a picture of her grandmother and mother knitting on primitive circular needles by the lake. She knit her first sweater in high school – a dark teal mohair cardigan using a pattern in Seventeen magazine. She learned to crochet in Peru, in the granny square era, and still has an unfinished blanket tucked away. While living in Costa Rica, she took up counted cross stitch and slowly covered her walls with samplers. In 2002, she went back to knitting, inspired by the photo of her grandmother and mother. Trudy retired in January 2012 after 25 years at a DC law firm, and started working at fibre space™ where her goal is to sell coral yarn to as many people as possible.
