History

fibre space™ is owned and operated by Danielle Romanetti, who can be found most days running around Old Town advocating for small businesses or tripping over one of her two dogs – Remi and Jojo.

“My shop is really an extension of my original business – Knit-a-Gogo, Inc., which I opened in October of 2006 to offer knitting classes in the DC metro area. Initially, I taught beginner and intermediate classes at coffee shops, bakeries and even public libraries in and around Washington, DC. Utilizing these spaces required a solid relationship with the businesses that hosted us and has led to the collaborative philosophy that fibre space™ now maintains. As my customers grew in number, so did the community of knitters and crocheters, as well as the number of classes being offered and my staff of instructors. Eventually, the Knit-a-Gogo community really needed a permanent home – a place where stitchers could meet outside of classes, buy quality supplies and and share with other stitchers. In 2009, this dream became a reality when Knit-a-Gogo became fibre space™ and opened its doors in historic Alexandria, VA. I am so excited to have finally put down permanent roots at our new building, 1319 Prince Street.

Our Team

When she isn't behind the counter with a mocha in hand and her kiddo Madeline at her side, Danielle is watching a Steeler game with her hubby or lobbying for small business needs at City Hall.

Darian started knitting through a gift from her sister of a pair of needles and a ball of hot pink yarn.  She picked up knitting again years later, alongside printmaking work to explore knitting as installation.

Our Services

Knit and Crochet Help

Stop by anytime during business hours for a quick fix or pattern questions. Our friendly staff are here to help you get back on track – for no charge!

Pattern and Yarn Selection

Our yarnistas provide a personal shopping experience when you visit the shop. Each staff member is highly knowledgeable and always willing to provide assistance with yarn substitutions and pattern ideas from our extensive library or online sources. No matter your skill level, we are ready to help you find your next project.

Ball Winding

We are happy to wind yarn purchased from the store on our electric ball winder. You may have up to two skeins of yarn wound while you wait, or you may choose to leave more behind to pick up later. You are welcome to use our manual ball winder at any time, regardless of where the yarn was purchased. If you happen to be in love with the yarn you are winding, and we don’t carry it, let us know what it is!

Stitch in Space

We host a weekly Stitch in Space on Thursday evenings until 9 pm. Sit and stitch in our cozy lounge and connect with others. Or get help fixing a knit or crochet mistake with our knowledgeable staff.

Plan Your Visit

Old Town is located just outside our nation’s capital and Ronald Reagan National Airport and a jump across the river from National Harbor Resort. We are easily reached via the Metro (four blocks away) or water taxi, and our wonderful King Street trolley provides free access to shops located up and down King Street. Find us one block off King Street at 1319 Prince Street.

Parking

We have free and metered street parking available in our neighborhood. Visitors can find 2-3 hours of free or metered parking within a block of the shop. See our parking map for more details!

Metro

We are just four blocks east from the King Street stop. If you plan to take the free trolley, exit the Metro through the main exit and find the trolley out front.

Trolley

Grab a seat on the free King Street trolley, which has stops from the King Street Metro to the Waterfront and everywhere in between. To locate us, exit the trolley at West Street. See more about the trolley here.

Bike or Stroller

We are located just a block from the city Bikeshare location on Commerce Street. Feel free to lock your bike outside our shop on the Prince Street side.

If you are coming with a stroller, strollers are also welcome in the store or you may park it outside.

Accessibility

If you require an accessible entrance, call ahead to have us put out our portable ramp. There is one short step (brick height) at the front of the building.
